Latest Minority Report: Jay Kay and his Pursuit of Happiness
Top of the morning greeting by Jorge: "The future is now"
I remember watching Minority Report and wishing for "the day we have that technology!" Almost there.
In another note, the MERCE CUNNINGHAM DANCE COMPANY's Crisis & Split Sides show (choreography by Merce Cunningham) uses music by Radiohead and Sigur Rós. And for their show last sunday at Miami, it featured a special appearance by Icelandic ambient rockers Sigur Rós. I bet that was interesting to watch and hear.
This is a sour news for music fans (Jamiroquai is randomly playing at my work as I type this! cruel! cruel!): Jamiroquai Retires:
UNINSPIRED JAY KAY QUITS MUSIC - FOR NOW JAMIROQUAI frontman JAY KAY is quitting the music business after his recent split with his record company left him feeling uninspired and "bored". The COSMIC GIRL singer was frustrated while working with Sony BMG and has no idea what he wants to do next creatively now he's no longer signed to the label. He says, "I haven't been happy there for a while. I've had some ups and downs but in the end the downs were just too many. When we talked about me leaving, I jumped at the chance. "I might be back if I get my inspiration again, but who knows. I don't know what to do next. "I'm bored. I don't want to go back on the road. We all need a rest to be honest. I don't need the money or the deal." Instead, the 37-year-old plans on settling down with his dream woman and rearing a family. He adds, "All I'm going to do now is fly my helicopter and look for the right lady to have children with. I feel free and I want to find love. "My guitarist has just had a baby girl and made me realise how much I want one. I'm not ready to tie the knot though, because I don't want to lose my house."
*Sigh* Well, he and his band have given us great moments with their music, I find it fair that he dedicates his full time to find happiness. Although you just know that he will be back, such a great musician can't go on too long without jamming=P
I would like to dedicate the following pictures to Laura, who taught me to play Virtual Insanity in piano in exchange of showing her how to make the Jay Kay moves! (shameful confession: we would dance to this in a harmonious choreography.... if only Merce had seen us back then=P)
Now imagine Pablo Francisco imitating the 'voice' from movie trailers "And now.... from the director of Trainspotting and 28 days later....they knew too much... we knewww to much"
Just when you thought you found the cheesiest video ever recorded (see La Tigresa del Oriente in the previous post), Leo leaves this comment, with indeed, the worst video (so bad I don't want to have it on the blog, so follow the link):
Hey kiddo, I showed your blog to someone from Peru so he could see the tigress, and he told me " that's because you haven't seen el Delfin"... he gave me this link... now this is in bad taste... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sd5tUw1HD40 Posted by Leo Susana | February 22, 2007 7:45 PM
And for our never ending amazement... just when I thought the quest for the worst video ever recorded was settled, Poli sends me this:
If you go to the video's YouTube page, you can be linked to "Platano con Salami: Official Video": even worse... I conclude there is that the worst video ever made is always in the making!
Leo then redeemed himself with this link: about a guy surfing artificial waves caused by a dynamite explosion.
I feel that I have to post something BEAUTIFUL, something nice to look at.... so stepping out of bad taste, check out these cool desks. Look at the black desk built imitating Lego bricks. I can picture architect Nicolas Godin having this at his office (he's also 1/2 of the french band Air). I can picture Steve Jobs using the MILK desk (well, it suits any mac user...)
The Stills' "Logic Will Break Your Heart"= love-at-first-listen. The Stills' "Without Feathers" = disappointment-at-first-second-third-and so on-'06 listens.
Maybe I didn't like The Stills's second album right away because I really enjoyed the over-the-top drama of "Still in Love Song", agreed that "Changes are no Good" or because "Lola Stars and Stripes" made me want to grab a M16. Their sound shifted from Interpolesque to Strokesque (not that it is a bad thing, both are safe grounds), but I kept wanting more of their old sound, more Fletcher than Hamelin, hence when I heard the whats-up-with-all-the-(previouslynonexistent)-brass"Without Feathers" almost a year ago, I mentally discarded it and moved on to other albums. Here I find myself, into 2007, clapping, smiling and dancing to some tunes on this CD, and ok with more exdrummer-nowsingerHamelin than Fletcher. To mention a couple of examples, suddenly I dig "Halo the Harpoon" with its Chopin-like melody, and swing to "Baby Blues" that features the sweet Emily Haines. "Destroyer" is fun with its epic horn section (btw, check out Ultima Bengala's new track "Amigo", with horn section too!).
In short, the Stills doesn't look so bad without feathers after all! I have hopes for this line-up.
I was going to put up the "Destroyer" video here for your easier viewing, but STILL the STILL's best video is the one for the "STILL in Love Song" (all puns intented=P) Enjoy the creepy(faces) + cool(strings) slow motion.
Now, Do you believe in third chances? (Lame way to link "second chances" and "threesomes"). Check out Jamiroquai's excellent threesome-theme song. It is one of the two new songs featured in "High Times: Singles 1992-2006" collection (the great "Runaway" being the other). something she's keeping from me, I'm not dumb I don't give a damn: three's not a crowd I'm a man, I'm a man. She likes boys, she likes girls. Click to listen (right click or something to download it) from here. (I think Jay Kay would agree with this sharing, since he is so pissed at his record label, and argued that the next album will be put up on the net for $5).
(I can't believe I'm still talking about the Stills!...desborde): Here's a funny quote from Tim Fletcher: I’ve always had a problem sizing myself up and feeling at par with my peers—as a teenager I was anxious, panicky and depressive. I had a hard time processing my impressions of everyone around me, and the realm of women was certainly out of the question. (in an article for Maisonneuve, September 2005) I find it quite funny how he says "and the realm of woman was CERTAINLY out of the question".
Lately I'm A Desperate Believer, But I'm Walking In A Straight Line!
**Cue Carmina Burana's O Fortuna** Here is the video for Silverchair's"Straight Lines", the first cut out of "Young Modern". UUUuuUU!! UuuuUUuu! Not that it matters, but check out Johns and Gillies sporting matching mustaches.
For a second in that video, he lets loose the dancer in him, reminding of the same that entertained you on the magnificent Live from Faraway Stables.
Yes, the expected top-notch sound, the expected chemistry, a nice little piano and nice chord changes but what I love the most about this song, is that it proves that Silverchair's/Dissociatives' best asset is Johns' voice. I consider his voice one of the best I have ever heard. It takes you high up and in the same second way down without breaking, it can vibrate 'filled' as do sounds of many voices together (like calling up an army to gather up at his throat), and it can vibrate to the thinnest thread of voice possible audible to our listening range. It sounds amazing full of rage, sounds amazing doing lovey-dovey lyrics. It transmits so well the feeling of the song whether its promoting melancholy or excitement; it matches with elaborated symphonic arrangements, and also serves pure hard rock. In one word, versatile. (sorry for all the colors, that's just me celebrating Diorama's cover)
The art direction for this all-the-way australian video reminded me of Chuck Anderson's work for Lupe Fiasco's "Food & Liquor".
In account of his personal life, he is better known for being married to fellow aussi Natalie Imbruglia and for being so depressed (suicidal) at a time that the trauma led him to an eating disorder: anorexia (he confessed everything in that infamous Rolling Stones interview) BUT the most notable mark of his personal life is his reactive arthritis condition. "The arthritis just went from bad to worse and went through all the bones in my body, through my spine, up into my neck," he said. "I just couldn't move... I couldn't have a shower because it felt like I was cracking my spine."(June '04, The Age). That is as ugly as it gets for a person that relies on his hand movements for a living. A long time passed with him thinking that he may not be able to play guitar again, err.....or walk. Here is the live 'comeback' performance, back in 2002 at the ARIA awards (Australia's Grammys equivalent)(+Paul Mac on the keys). They changed "The Greatest View" guitar line so his hands wouldn't lock up/hurt.
One last thing: here's their 2006 performance at the ARIA awards, covering Midnight Oil. This "I don't want to be the one" cover is to be included in the "Straight Lines" single, along with "All Across The World" and "Sleep All Day". (Dang, I hope you realize it's been like 4 years since the last single release). .
That's it for now! Thanks for reading! I'll try to post the video with Daniel doing a guitar solo with his tongue later. And here, enjoy the lyrics:
Breathing from a hole in my lung I had no one But faces in front of me Racing through the void in my head To find traces of a good luck academy Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Sparks ignite I’m training for thought About no one And nothing in particular Watched the sick and suckered and drove Resent nothing There’s good will inside of me Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Wake me up low with a fever Walking in a straight line Set me on fire in the evening Everything will be fine Waking up strong in the morning Walking in a straight line Lately I’m a desperate believer But walking in a straight line
Something I will never forget I felt desperate It stuck to the narrow way Invisible to everyone else I'm a sex change And a damsel with no heroin Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
I don't need no time to say There's no changing yesterday If you keep talking and I keep walking in straight lines
The Young and Modern Abbey Road leads to Casa de Teatro
I have three things to share with you today:
ONE: A GREAT IDEA I rather not share my opinion about this effort by UK's Channel 4 & Co. (I'm gonna look like aMichael-Jackson's-Dangerous-Tour front-rower-fan) So, straight up: Live from Abbey Road in a nutshell: Each artist/band performs (without TV, presenter or audience) 3 tracks, linked together with intimate interviews.
Season 1 Show One (Paul Simon / Corinne Bailey Rae / Primal Scream) Show Two (Kasabian / Josh Groban / The Good, The Bad and the Queen) Show Three (Jamiroquai / Goo Goo Dolls / Damien Rice) Show Four (Dr. John / LeAnn Rimes / Massive Attack) Show Five (The Feeling / Gnarls Barkley / The Killers) Show Six (Snow Patrol / Madeleine Peyroux / Red Hot Chili Peppers) Show Seven (The Kooks / Wynton Marsalis / Muse) Show Eight (Amos Lee / Randy Crawford & Joe Sample / David Gilmour) Show Nine (Ray LaMontagne / The Zutons / Shawn Colvin / Nerina Pallot) Show Ten (Craig David / James Morrison / Dave Matthews) Show Eleven (John Mayer / Norah Jones / Richard Ashcroft) Show (Why I am typing the numbers) 12 (Gipsy Kings / Natasha Bedingfield / Iron Maiden)
Every time I watched a video I went: "oh he looks like..." CLICK FOR LARGER VIEW
(Just in case, Gilmour/Frusciante didn't perform together... )
In other Jamiroquai news, my friend Alberti linked me to this sad sad news, and I was mentally linked to the sad sad news that on January 30th, Luger, JK's German Shepherd was put to sleep (he was suffering from Motor Neurone disease). I had a pic with JK for a Calendar (animal charity I think) with Luger and Colt, but I cant find it =(. Here's JK promoting Jamiroquai's new greatest hits album/dvd High Times: Singles 1992-2006 himself.
TWO: YAY!!!!!!!! MORE SILVERCHAIR There must be a planet somewhere, where you turn up your radio and get 4 to 7 Silverchair songs while you randomly scan the stations. Seriously, what these guys do with sound is mesmerizing... Good news for us fans: new album Young Modern out this March (AU release) While Johns declares Silverchair would much rather "be great than big," he acknowledges that with "Young Modern" he wants to reclaim the success the band enjoyed in the U.S. 10 years ago. "I'd like to not just be known for the band that has the frog on the cover," he laughs. "LA Times"
TRES: ROCK DOMINICANO Mañana en Casa de Teatro Nelson García presenta su producción Otra Bestia / Paola Moreno como invitada especial. DO NOT MISS IT! Its bound to be great, have you heard "Eléctrico"?
Ultima Bengala lanza oficialmente Amigo: el primer corte de su producción Volumen y Repetición.
camera+telescope+sublime+lost in translation+lidia/beetlejuice+stars+textiles=me according to Robert! I can't thank you enough for this uber-personalized gift Robert!!!
Here's my present for my readers! A delicious song with strings on top!
I make my music for everyone, not just the chosen few. My music is an experiment... You've got to allow yourself to make a lot of mistakes, then the real magic happens. If you play it really safe you'll never get any treats(Post Live CD includes this quote)
It's old news but just in case, you should know that Timbaland has worked on 1-2-3-4-5-6-7, seven tracks for Bjork's new album (that should be around the half of it unless she surprises us with a StadiumArcadium-doublekick stunt). She also collaborated for a track on his almost-out new album.
Even though Timbaland is amidst legal issues (looks like he used a song for Nelly Furtado's album that wasn't his without permission // in case you want to learn more: i.e. 1, i.e. 2), he has a wide cataloge of proven successes that includes Jay-Z, Beck, Ludacris, Justin Timberlake, PCD...
Many questions surround my heart-pounding expectation of this collaboration for I am a fan of both (and dang! its been a while since the Drawing Restraint soundtrack, and that wasn't a Bjork album per se). Will she only borrow the spacey rhythms? How will her voice blend with the staple "Timbaland sound"?... and (this one is the silliest) Will she use the characteristic hip hop slang? And my thoughts wander... "Yo! is phat quiet in here!" // "fo'shizzle my nizzle: i've seen it all!" // "big time pimpin!" // "whats the dealion isobel?" ok ok I'll STOP! (Aqui Karlla me dice que piense las cosas antes de decirlas). It'll be "spottieottiedopaliscious"!
In another note (NOT in the level of Oprah, Santana, Tori Amos, Axl), she is another example of survival: the poor thing, little kids threw stones at her! "When I was developing as a vocalist, little kids here in Reykjavik would throw rocks at me because they thought I was weird, but English music papers like the NME discovered The Sugarcubes and gave me some credit, so I was never offended by them calling me an elf.".
I've been told many times that I look like her. I admit we do have a thing in common besides being petite and having a funny english accent, we don't look our age. She's 41! dayummmmm.

My little cousin Enmanuel introduced me to the world of Pocoyo last Sunday. And I must thank him. Pocoyo(Spain) is an animated series for little kids but highly enjoyable by any age. Stephen Fry is the narrator for the english version (UK comedian/The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy 'guide' voice/V for Vendetta's talkshow gay host)
You can visit the Official Blog and learn from the creators about Pocoyo. i.e. When we started the series my daughter Vega was 2 years old. Every night before bed she used to say a little prayer that goes “baby Jesus light of my life, you are a child like me” (In Spanish, Jesusito de mi vida, tú eres niño como yo). Because she still couldn´t talk properly, instead of saying "como yo” at the end of the prayer, she used to say “poco yo”! - David Cantolla.
I find the sound effects: top notch, minimal and Nintendo-era evoking.
Here, meet Pocoyo dancing to the Artic Monkeys!
Now watch a full episode: DONT TOUCH! (like 6 minutes)
hmmm I could have been a Pocoyo Stunt Double
And from Pocoyo on to the Beatles! Check out Julie Taymor's Across the Universe (Bono's innit)
Jude & Lucy, how clever =P
post title: Across the Universe | The Beales (as offspring: Echoes | Pink Floyd)
I never thought that when I grew up I would be in a band
What does Jack White (1/2 of The White Stripes and member of The Raconteurs) and Noe Camacho (my brother and lead singer of Ultima Bengala) have in common? They both know a bunch about music, textiles and upholstery! I mean, Jack's first job was upholstering furniture at a shop, where he teamed up with his mentor/boss to form the musical project The Upholsterers, (Los Tapiceros) literally. Later he went solo as "Third Man Upholstery: YOUR FURNITURE’S NOT DEAD”. (He is a.k.a. Third Man, my guess: because of his fixation with anything that has to do with #3). My brother and I have been raised between rolls of fabrics for upholstery and dealing with upholsterers. Its what we do for a living! So you can safely say that at my brother's age, Jack White was doing the same he is doing now: checking out fabrics and strapping on his guitar on his free time! (hmm then he landed a record deal... interesting..)

This is a review of the DVD included in Sublime's "Everything Under the Sun" new boxset. Pardon the level of depth, it is intended for fans. In this post, "STL&E" references Sublime's previous documentary 'Stories, Tales, Lies & Exaggerations".
In the background of the menu you can enjoy both "Slow Ride" and another video-version of "Date Rape". The "Slow Ride" video footage is the same seen in "STL&E" and this version of "Date Rape" is a continuous shot of band playing, ending in a mosh pit.
1) Don't Push (house of blues '96) -"laughter! its free! anytime just call me! 439-whatever whatever whatever..." while the crowd continues "0116" -Brad singing "dont push me too far" while the security is pushing people away from the stage 2) Garden Grove (house of blues '96) - he messed up the lyrics while explaining "(pull over), there's a reason why my sould is unsound", aware of that, he goes whatever-whatever again 3) Right Back (house of blues '96) -if you are an old fan, you'll get the chills with this performance 4) New Trash (house of blues '96) -messy song in nature, messy live 5) Same In The End -well put together, even though most of the footage used can be found in "STL&E" 6) Caress Me Down ('95) - we've "heard" this track before (in Stand By Your Van)! its so nice to see it on video, as Brad begins "we're gonna try a new one, 'caress me down' i got new lyrics so im gonna fucking figure..." -Lou is funny in this one, but the funniest part (cruel but funny) is when a security helps out off the front line a woman by carrying her out, and right there, a guy being thrown around by the crowd, lands right on her face. -BRAD trying to pull a sexy move, priceless... "uhhh and the girl caress me down" right on the uhhhh... he promptly desists. 7) REAL SITUATION! -a collage of new "old-pics" for this cover. This Marley song seems to be referring to the current affairs of humanity (all the wars and conflicts)... thats why its a classic= always current! (well, that made sense in my head at least=P) 8) atlanta interview (Warped Tour '95 by MTV) sublime @ atlanta, the home of my braves! -here you can see, once again, that brad (sticking out his now-very-huge belly) was quite interesting to talk to, never pretentious..... 9) Seed -starts out as the previous video for this song (Opie painting on a wall..) but then shows more of Opie's artwork. 10) Saw Red -same live video with gwen stefani shown in "STL&E" Brad (alone on the stage)= oh Gwendolyn? where she at? (Gwen emerges) Gwen Stefani from No Doubt! Say what's up, alright? Gwen = hi! "gosh bradley you look so cute!" Brad= I'm prosperous! Gwen= yum yum! Brad= ill start up alright? I notice the most mundane things: Brad's guitar pick falls, interrupting the guitar rhythm, quickly picks it up and apologizes with a mischievous smile. 11) Miami Brad wailing, that voice is my home! 12) Hong Kong Phooey Hong Kong Phooey' opening track impregnated with sublime's stylee... funny all the way: Brad really dances this one out. Faaaaannrrrrriffic! At the end, the band does a brief heartfelt impersonation of hong kong phooey on a couch hehe. 13) All you need this is my strongest I'm-so-glad-im-watching-this moment: put aside that this is one of my favorite songs, it features footage never seen in any other documentary... Sublime riding a dusty road (a lá Vanishing Point w/out the car crashes) goes along with the lyrics " Back out on the highway I wont feel afraid" 14) Mary ('95) The video from the audio-track featured in Sublime Acoustic: Bradley Nowell and friends. And Yay! more footage from the Cattleman's Wharf. 15) Badfish Same promo video. I think i spotted Troy twice pregnant. (I don't know the year of the shooting but Brad didn't have Jakob's tattoo yet). 16) Date Rape Same promo video. Here you have Multi-Angle option. *Ron Jeremy plays both the Judge that 'gave him 25 years', and the large inmate from whom he takes it in the behind. 17) STP Same intense video seen in STL&E. (Source for 'Robbin' the Hood' art cover) In between, Brad appears drinking beer in a car and explaining to his band-mates the capture of that part of California that they are driving on from the mexicans. "thats history corner". (I believe he is talking about Stockton, which he mentions twice in the 'Paddle Out' lyrics). 18) Ebin ('94) New footage! Brad in a Cowboy hat. I've always believed the protagonist of this song is Eric, for the bass lines and bass playing are amazing. 19) Leaving Babylon ( Costa Rica, 2/1993) A poorly lit performance but it is a nice cover of Bad Brains. 20) Don't Push Sublime 1990!
